Background
As part of the legacy infrastructure in the Downtown Morgantown area, the Baird Street combined sewer box provides sanitary and storm sewer service from the lower most point of the drainage basin at Baird Street up to and including much of Willey Street. The Baird Street combined sewer box is the main conveyance for this neighborhood’s drainage to the Deckers Creek interceptor line. This infrastructure is critical and needs repairs following a summer of historic flooding and a long-standing problem of uncontrolled stormwater runoff.
Project Description
This project will permanently stabilize the existing combined sewer box and slope where it is located. Also, as part of this project, a stormwater only main line will be extended up from Deckers Creek to Baird Street to provide a conveyance for future storm sewer upgrades that will occur as properties within the drainage basin become redeveloped and their sanitary and storm sewers are separated.
Specifications and Details
This work will involve repairing the slope below and above the rail trial around the existing combined sewer box where it was damaged from the summer floods. The existing combined sewer box will be backfilled and stabilized with a combination of rip rap stone and concrete fill. A 36-inch storm sewer main will be installed from Deckers Creek up to the end of Baird Street paralleling the existing combined sewer box. A map of the project location can be found here and here via Dropbox.
Benefits
This work will accomplish three equally important tasks. First, it will extend the life of the existing infrastructure avoiding future costly repairs or replacements. Second, it will provide a means that will support separate stormwater and sanitary sewer systems as new development occurs within the drainage basin and further separation of flows is accomplished. The work will also help protect the rail trail in the area.
Project Status
Work is expected to begin as weather permits and is estimated to take six (6) weeks to complete. Brief Rail Trail closures are likely throughout the project at times but will be kept to a minimum as much as possible. Temporary interruptions are also to be expected in this area, but the contractor will try to accommodate trail users.
