To our customers, neighbors and friends:

Although this report is provided in 2024, it summarizes data collected in calendar year 2023. What you will find within the report is that our drinking water not only satisfies all state and federal drinking water standards, but in all cases surpasses those requirements. Our water is of an extremely high quality.

In 2023, we provided 3.6 billion gallons of world-class quality water to more than 100,000 Morgantown area residents, averaging close to 10 million gallons per day. Of this, roughly 70% of the raw water was drawn from the Monongahela River and about 30% came from Cobun Creek.

During 2023 we also made important investments in our water infrastructure. We made improvements to the Cobun Creek dam in White Park along with the intake tower. As part of this project, we refurbished and reinforced the spillway to ensure the reservoir’s integrity and to protect public safety. In doing this work we kept an eye on aesthetics as was requested by the public.

Also, in 2023 we took the historic step of filling the Flegal Dam and Reservoir and began using water from it as a primary raw water source. This reservoir provides Morgantown with more than just an alternative raw water source should the Monongahela River experience a contamination event. The stocking of various fish species that occurred in 2023 positions the reservoir to provide the area with recreational opportunities for generations to come.

During 2023 we also invested in a host of other water infrastructure improvements across our area. An important project involved the completion of the Mountaintop Beverage water line. As part of this project that helped bring hundreds of jobs to the area, we constructed a water tank to support Mountaintop Beverage operations as well as future Morgantown Industrial Park growth.

An integral part of this work involved funding from MUB, the County Commission, and Mountaintop Beverage. What’s more, in receiving a $2 million grant from the United States Economic Development Administration, we set new standards. This was the first grant of its kind to have been awarded in the United States and we’re proud to have been a part of the team awarded the funding.

Another significant water related project that we began in 2023 was the Westridge/Chaplin Hill project. Like with Mountaintop Beverage, this project was also made possible through collaborative funding between multiple local and state agencies. In addition, 2023 saw us extending water to support airport upgrades and new developments such as The Meadows and Falling Waters.

Collectively, the projects mentioned here amount to more than $50 million in community investments. Such investments are critical to ensuring safe, clean water is available across our area. The projects also provide opportunities to bring community, state and federal agencies together to solve critical infrastructure challenges facing greater Morgantown.

More importantly, during 2023 we continued investing in our staff. The Morgantown area is fortunate to have the dedicated professionals of MUB working to ensure that water and wastewater services remain affordable and are of extremely high quality. It’s our people that make us an industry leader and an organization for which all of Morgantown can be proud. It takes world-class people to deliver world-class services and that’s what we have at MUB.

Please take time to review this year’s CCR. In addition to test results and other notices, it contains a host of information. This includes data on our water sources, explanations of likely sources of contamination for various chemicals, and definitions. The report also shows the condition of our raw water, the quality of our treated water, and compares our results against federal and state standards.

If you have questions or comments regarding this report or your water, please feel free to contact Treatment and Production Manager Chris Linger at 304-599-2111, visit our website at https://mub.org, or follow us on one of our social media sites. In addition, remember that MUB board meetings, which are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m., are open to the public.

We thank you for your continued support of MUB’s efforts to protect our water resources and deliver world-class water. Your support makes a tremendous difference.

Sincerely,

Barbara Parsons, Ed.D., Chair
