Hydrants

Morgantown Utility Board is responsible for providing water for fire service to the City of Morgantown. As a part of this responsibility we flow test hydrants to ensure that each device is properly functioning. Flow testing also serves to remove sediment from the system which helps maintain a high quality of water.

What to Expect During Flow Testing

  1. Temporary Decrease in Water Pressure

When a fire hydrant is opened, water flow through the system increases significantly. This may cause a temporary drop in water pressure for nearby homes and businesses while testing is underway. Water pressure should return to normal once testing is completed. If pressure does not return to normal:

    • Check other faucets in your home in case debris is lodged in an aerator.
    • If low pressure persists, please contact MUB at (304) 292-8443 or email customer-service@mub.org.

  2. Water Discoloration

The increased water flow during hydrant testing may stir up minerals and deposits inside water pipes, which can cause temporary discoloration of tap water. If your water appears discolored:

    • Run cold water from a faucet at the lowest point in your home until the water runs clear (this may take 10–15 minutes).
    • If the water does not clear, wait a few minutes and repeat the process.
    • Avoid washing clothes until clear water is restored.
If discoloration continues after following these steps, please call MUB at (304) 292-8443.

Important Safety Reminders

  • Opening or tampering with fire hydrants is illegal and extremely dangerous.
  • An open hydrant releases water with tremendous force, which can cause serious injury and poses risks to both pedestrians and motorists.
  • Fire hydrants must remain visible and accessible at all times. Please do not block hydrants with vehicles, shrubs, or other obstructions, as this could delay firefighters during an emergency.

MUB appreciates your cooperation as we work to maintain a safe and reliable water system for the community.
